Cleaning Water Spots On Wood Floors

To remove dark water stains from hardwood floors clean and dry the area first then sand it thoroughly until you get rid of the dark spots.

The first step in this method is to wipe the table with a microfiber cloth to get rid of any crumbs or residue. In a small bowl mix equal parts vinegar and olive oil. The use of a mayonnaise and baking soda mixture is effective at removing water spots on any wood surface. The baking soda helps activate the effects of the mayonnaise.

Mayonnaise and baking soda are not damaging to wood. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise over the water spot then sprinkle baking soda on top of it. Just as toothbrush is used in removing junk from the teeth it can also help remove water stains on hardwood floor. Wipe away the mineral spirits with a water dampened cloth followed by a dry cloth to remove the water.

Finally refinish the floor with polyurethane. If this method does not remove the stain lightly sand with fine sandpaper. Bleach the part using hydrogen peroxide and then stain the floor with a color that matches that of your floor. Apply the mixture to the water stain using a cloth.

There are also a variety of homemade wood cleaner recipes you can use to keep your wood looking shiny and clean even without stains. For floors finished with wax or penetrating stains very gently rub the water stain on the wood with 000 steel wool and wax. Then scrub it into the stain using a circular motion. Clean the sanded area with 00 steel wool and mineral spirits or a wood floor cleaner.

Let the floor dry then stain wax and buff by hand. Wipe in the direction of the wood grain until the stain is gone. When you clean outdoor furniture so you might not see a big difference in the area if your water stains have been around for more than a few days. Scrub the bleach into the stain with a toothbrush.

If the water stain has been there for only a few days use the heat in this method to evaporate all. This technique works best on newer spots e g. A non gel toothpaste is required for this. Apply a solvent based hardwood floor wax to the scrubbed area with a soft cloth and buff it.

Make sure the toothbrush is clean and unused so you don t get any stains on the wood. Dip a clean toothbrush into the bleach and swirl it around. Rub the toothpaste on the affected area for a minute try to avoid rubbing on non affected area as this can remove the finish in those areas. If you want more immediate results rub the area with mineral spirits and 000 steel wool.

As long as the water hasn t seeped into the wood these white water marks aren t difficult to remove. The vinegar will help remove the stain while the olive oil acts as a furniture polish. Iron the stains out.
